Cryptik Lettering. It was stopped in my tracks a few days ago when I stumbled upon the beautiful scripts of Cryptic. Looking for more information on the man behind the movement yielded few results: he’s quite under-the-radar preferring his work to speak for itself. Rather than an artists bio, you’ll find this lofty and ambitious statement on his website: The Cryptik Movement is a public art campaign dedicated to helping humanity evolve towards greater awareness and understanding through the use of compelling, iconic imagery that demands both scrutiny and reverie. The purpose of this organization is to facilitate the development of a deeper, more meaningful philosophy of life. I gather that Cyrptic the person is based in L.A. and that his calligraphy is actually highly stylised English. Deciphering it might be difficult, the script has many influences from ancient scripts to Cholo grafitti, but as an abstract, decorative motif it’s very attractive. The written work often transcribes mantras, quotes, and poems of Buddhist and Hindu origin. Judging by the tools used, it’s a mixture of calligraphy and lettering. You’ll find a couple of interviews here, and more recently here.
