A sky-punch cloud. Photograph taken in Poland. This beautiful but rare and strange phenomenon is called Sky Punch, or Hole Punch clouds. An explanation for this event is still debated, but some believe that the hole is formed when falling ice crystals from the exhaust of a passing aircraft “punch” through cirrocumulus clouds, since there is often evidence of jet contrails in the area when the sky punch clouds are observed. Those falling ice crystals you can see sublimate – or go straight from a solid to a gas – as they fall toward the ground. Photo credit: Matylda Tomaszewska-Naumowicz

Recommended science page of the week: Cancer Research & Technology. Oh, cancer biology. Is there any field of science so unfairly maligned by social media? Not a week goes by when another fruit turns up that apparently "cures" cancer, and bizarre conspiracy theories abound. This is one of my favourite pages because it simply deals with the facts, evidence and research. Very interesting and highly informative. Like it here: http://on.fb.me/1bK7Rcr

How hot is the sun? If you guessed “pretty damn hot,” you’d be right! The core of the sun is 15 million degrees Celsius and is the hottest place in the solar system. The next layer varies based on position. The deep part of the radiative zone is approximately 7 million degrees, while the superficial area is 2 million degrees. The outer portion of the convective zone (the area we see when we look at the sun) is about 5,500 degrees. This is where it stops making sense. The atmosphere of the sun jumps up to 20,000 degrees, and the heat radiating away from the sun in the corona can range from one to ten million degrees Celsius. What causes these massive temperature fluctuations isn't known for sure, but there are ongoing experiments seeking to find out. More info: http://bit.ly/13UKWSD
