Orlando nightclub shooting

A shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando killed at least 49 people on Sunday, June 12. It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Severe weather rolls into Olivette, #Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, on Tuesday. This photo of a dark shelf cloud was captured by Jason Tuggle. Lots of strong tornadoes, big hail and severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday across a large part of the country from the Great Plains east, but especially in parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and north Texas. It may not be blue but it is a bluemoon. When more than one full moon occurs in a month its called "blue" even though it looks like every other full moon. I shot this tonight through my son's telescope with my #lumia640xl phone. Photo by @salvarezphoto #bluemoon #lumiaxnatgeo @lumiaxnatgeo

More than 9,000 firefighters are battling 21 major blazes in California, suffering, for months now, from the effects of drought. The largest California wildfire is raging in the Lower Lake area north of San Francisco, the Associated Press reports. The fire nearly tripled in size over the weekend to 84 square miles. It has destroyed 24 homes and 26 outbuildings and was threatening 6,300 additional homes. In this photograph by Noah Berger of EPA, firefighters watch as the Rocky fire burns near Clearlake, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2015. See more photos on time.com/photography.

Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride // Marble Canyon of the Grand Canyon National Park — a place that once had a proposed 310-foot dam proposal but was turned down due to public outrage and hard work of many. This reflective spot is one of my favorite realms inside this rock world. #chasingrivers #conservation #Coloradoriver #marblecanyon #reflection #oars

Sunrise over the #BeringSea in #Alaska. @jimwilson125 recently traveled to the far western reaches of the state. His destination: St. Lawrence Island, which was once home to a 4,800-acre radar station called Northeast Cape. Roughly 600 military installations across Alaska were never fully cleaned up after World War II and the Cold War. As a result, health problems in communities nearby have lingered and festered. Today, several longtime residents on St. Lawrence Island are speaking up about the things they saw at Northeast Cape, which is one of the biggest and most polluted sites.

Photo @ladzinski / A long exposure extenuating rapidly rising clouds and quickly changing weather at high altitude on #MountKilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa's tallest mountain. Only 3° south of the equator, Kilimanjaro has stable weather most of the year, minus the rainy season seen here, which is unusual for a mountain this size. Climbing this mountain passes you through 5 distinct ecosystems, endemic flora and unbelievable views, it's a must do if you ever get the chance! @3stringsproductions

My favorite type of paddling: still waters and mazes of icebergs.

Here's a gorgeous shot of America's newest wilderness: #BoulderWhiteClouds in Idaho. Today, President Obama signed a bill into law that protects nearly 276,000 acres of #Idaho's high mountain backcountry as #wilderness -- an area of the country that is home to crystal lakes and abundant wildlife. The #Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Jerry Peak Wilderness Additions Act preserves Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness, White Clouds Wilderness and Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness. There’s a right break out here somewhere. Fortunately, even when Nagigia, Fiji is flatter than Kansas, it's still pretty beautiful. Mark Anders (@mtanders) is still holding out hope for an incoming tide. @natgeoadventure @nikonusa #NikonNoFilter @SanDisk #SanDiskStories @novusselect

Hubble Finds a Little Gem: This colorful bubble is a planetary nebula called NGC 6818, also known as the Little Gem Nebula. It is located in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer), roughly 6,000 light-years away from us. The rich glow of the cloud is just over half a light-year across - humongous compared to its tiny central star - but still a little gem on a cosmic scale. Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes, forest and shoreline beckon you to visit #PicturedRocks National Lakeshore in #Michigan. Pictured here is the park’s #MosquitoBeach -- a gorgeous, isolated beach that is the perfect place to take in the scenic beauty of #LakeSuperior. Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo. It’s great to be back in the magical rain forest of Gunung Palung in Borneo. Working with fellow NatGeo explorer and filmmaker Trip Jennings (@TripJenningsVideo), here catching some sunbeams as he crosses the rope bridge at the Cabang Panti Research Site. We are here documenting orangutans and the conservation work of #saveGPorangutans in this important orangutan habitat. #orangutan, #Indonesia, #Borneo, #GunungPalung, #saveGPorangutans, #rainforest, @thephotosociety, @natgeocreative, @TimLaman.

Summer storms make for some amazing pics. This photo was taken last week as a thunderstorm passed through the sage steppe on #Seedskadee National #WildlifeRefuge in Wyoming. The clouds thinned for just a few minutes at #sunset, allowing the "magic" light to filter through the clouds as a bolt of #lightning struck at the same time. ⚡️ Photo by Tom Koerner, @USFWS.

Photo @ladzinski / Golden beams of sun breaking through storm clouds and warming up the hills of South West Utah. This is a classic scene of complimentary colors, meaning, that when paired together each color is amplified creating the strongest contrast. Leonardo da Vinci once observed that "the finest harmonies were those between colors exactly opposed"

Photo by @jimmy_chin / @merufilm Mount Meru and the infamous Sharks Fin revealing in the mist. Garwhal Himalaya, India. On Meru from Author Jon Krakauer: “The Shark’s Fin on Meru Central - this climb has seen more attempts and more failures than any route in the Himalaya. It’s at the headwaters of the Ganges river, one of the most sacred rivers on earth, the center of the universe. It’s this weird nexus, the point where heaven and earth and hell all come together. The thing that gives it its name, the Shark’s Fin, is this 1500ft blade of beautiful flawless granite way up high at 20,000ft. This is the test of the master climber. It’s been tried by so many great climbers. Some of the best climbers in the world have tried and failed on this route. Meru is not just hard, it’s hard in this really complicated way. You can’t just be a good ice climber. You can’t just be good at altitude. You can’t just be a good rock climber. You’ve got to be able to ice climb, mixed climb and you’ve got to be able to do big wall climbing at 20,000ft. It’s all that stuff wrapped in one package that’s defeated so many good climbers, and will probably defeat you and maybe defeat everybody for all time. That to a certain kind mindset is an irresistible appeal.” - @krakauernotwriting @MeruFilm is playing in select theaters nationwide.
