Cort Guitars' big #NAMM news is its new partnership with Manson Guitars to create a more affordable version of the guitar played by Muse frontman Matt Bellamy. The two companies worked painstakingly with Bellamy over the course of three years—sending him multiple prototypes in order to get everything to match his original as much as possible at a reasonable price (about $700 street). It features a basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, custom locking tuners, a kill switch, and pickups wound to the same spec as his U.K.-made Manson.
Universal Audio debuted three super-cool new plug-ins for their Apollo recording interfaces. Sound Machine Wood Works ($299) lets you plug in a piezo-equipped acoustic and get studio-miked sounds, as well as re-voice resonance and acoustic properties. The UA Distortion Essentials bundle ($249) features an official Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 emulation, a simulation of an early-'80s Pro Co Rat, and an emulation of a '70s Big Muff Pi. And the Friedman Amplifiers Plug-In Collection by Brainworx ($249) features emulations of Dave Friedman's DS40 and BE100 amps.
Eddie Van Halen was born 60 years ago—yes, sixty—on January 26, 1955. In the history of rock guitar, no guitarist outside of the first electric wave - Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck - has had quite the effect on modern players as Eddie Van Halen has. From the opening moments of the first Van Halen record (with "Eruption") on through the progressively more complex, experimental, and aggressive phases of his career ("Everybody Wants Some!!" "Mean Streets," "Little Guitars," "Humans Being," et al), Van Halen explored more areas of guitar technique and sound in a shorter period of time than anyone since the 1960s. Along the way, EVH pioneered the use of the locking tremolo, stripped-to-the-bone instruments (the Frankenstrat), two-handed tapping (although he did not invent the technique), and tap harmonics. Almost every guitarist who has picked up the instrument since Van Halen debuted has incorporated one or more of these elements into their playing. Happy birthday, Mr. VH. (Photo by Neil Zlozower.)
