Just Words

This originally was recorded as a synth pop song, which was my style at the time. It was inspired almost exclusively by New Order including the vocals. The lyrics weren’t given much thought except for continuity within the song. They also had and still don’t have much relevance to anything I’ve experienced.
My musical style has changed over time until I’ve finally identified a style that I really love, which is probably best labeled as prog or progressive rock. My biggest influence right now is …

Save Me Lord

This is one of my personal favorites that I’ve put together. The original idea came from a music class I was taking where we were discussing negro spirituals as well as call-and-response song styles. So, it began in the original version with just a stomp and clap that I recorded. I wanted to find something for the response part of the verses and “Save me lord” just seemed a natural to repeat throughout. So, the song then worked out to be about a man praying to God to heal his broken heart.
The …

Stop Calling Me Shirley

This one was especially fun for me. The music is kind of funk oriented and I don’t know what gave me the idea of adding the clips from “Airplane”. So, I gathered as many clips as I could and then fit them into the song. “Don’t call me Shirley” was the obvious favorite to repeat in the chorus since it’s probably the most famously quoted line in the entire movie. There were two groupings that demanded to be put into verses, which are all the weird questions the pilot asks the kid in the cockpit …

Always and a Day

This is about getting through a rough patch with my girlfriend. In every song I create there are elements that I just love. Often this comes from being surprised by something. In this case, the chorus is the big thing about this song over the other elements. The way the beat is laid out lent itself to writing fast lyrics. So, when it came time to practice and then record those lyrics I realized that I couldn’t sing it the way I’d wanted to. My breath control just wasn’t there because of the …

In the Middle of Nowhere

This song has a special place in my heart because it came out of nowhere for me. It’s also a different sound than I’ve been used to creating. I love the driving beat to it. The lyrics were originally written to talk about the beauty of a hike through Pisgah Forest in North Carolina with my girlfriend but the music dictated that it be more aggressive than that. The music also came from what I call the “junk file”, which is where I store little bits of this and that which hadn’t worked out when …

Bacon mouthwash? April Fools' marketing jokes go viral

Marketers took advantage of April Fools' Day to appeal to customers' sense of humor with promotional pranks.
April Fools' Day was canceled this year by the Presidential Commission on National Holidays.
If you believed this nonsense — even for a fraction of a moment — that's the main reason so many …
