THE VENETIAN FLAG: For Lion of San Marco or Leone Marciano or Winged Lion means the symbolic representation of the St. Mark's evangelist, depicted in the form of a winged lion. Other elements are present in various combinations: the halo on his head, a book and a sword between his paws. The Lion of St. Mark is the secular city of Venice symbol, its ancient Republic and current symbol of the City and the Province of Venice and the Veneto Region and several other agencies and civil and military administrations. The Leone Marciano appears in all the cities that were under the rule of the Venetian Republic (usually in the main squares and historic buildings). It is also in flags, banners, badges, statues and coins. Also appears in the naval and military flags of the Italian Republic.
