Freakin’ Sweet Knots

My Dad’s been teaching me how to tie knots since I was a kid. I’ve been able to tie a bowline backwards or forwards in seconds for as long as I can remember. It was the practical knots that always stuck — I wasn’t as interested in the decorative knots. He’d often tie a type of decorative knot …

APOD: Earth Waves at Saturn (2013 Aug 24) Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, Cassini Project, Denizens of Earth http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130824.html Explanation: This friendly photo collage is constructed from more than 1,400 images shared by denizens of planet Earth as part of the Cassini Mission's July 19th Wave at Saturn event. The base picture of Earth corresponds to the view from the Saturn-orbiting Cassini spacecraft on that date as its own cameras recorded images including planet Earth as a pale blue dot in the background. Of course, Saturn was 9.65 Astronomical Units away at the time, so it took light from all the waving Earth dwellers just over 80 minutes to travel there. Want to smile? Download and zoom in to the full-resolution (28MB jpg file) collage image available here. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-256 http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/collage2013.html http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/news/newsreleases/newsrelease20130821/ http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/photos/imagedetails/index.cfm?imageId=4880 Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=130824 #APOD

Why we’re a long way from computers that really work like the human brain

IBM was in the news last week when it announced it had created “an entire computing architecture based on the brain” (at least, that’s how Gizmodo summed it up). A few days before that, a press release announced that scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich, a research center in Germany, had run …
