Photo: A Bowery Santa on the subway. 1977. “I really wanted to get at this idea of the costume covering, protecting or transforming,” said Susan Meiselas, a Magnum photographer who spent two holiday seasons following a group of homeless men, many of them alcoholics, employed by the Volunteers of America around Christmas time. “I think that it gave them a social function that they took a lot of pleasure in, versus the rejection that they felt through the drinking and through the dissolve of their lives,” she said. “This is the moment where they could be celebrated.” More on Lens: http://nyti.ms/1bg0dBj Photo by Susan Meiselas/Magnum Photos
