Like Lauren’s dad, Bruce, parents can take intersex diagnoses in many ways. Some feel guilty, some are upset, and some just don’t know how to deal. Do you have any advice for parents? Toby: Despite everything you will be feeling, remember that it is YOUR child living with their diagnosis. Know that this doesn’t mean that you can’t have your feelings about it, but keep in mind they are the ones living with it and they are the ones dealing with so many varying/conflicting thoughts and feelings. Please talk to them and try to understand what they are feeling, make sure they know that they have your support. Do your best. CJ: I think the best thing that parents can do is to listen to their child/young person and respond to questions sensitively. Try not to be embarrassed about the things your child may ask you - it’s taken a lot more for them to come to you than you may at first realise. Also, if you’re not sure of the answer, it’s fine, and better, to say ‘I don’t know’ and then help the child/young adult to make a doctors’ appointment to help them find the answers. Above all, just let your child know that you are there for them and listen to what they have to say without making assumptions about how they may be feeling. Let them know that you’re there for them and want to help them :) Ali: Whatever your feeling as a parent, remember that your child may experience a wave of various emotions. The path is not straight and there will be likely ups and downs along the way. Sometimes its alright to give a child space and let them approach with questions or concerns about their intersex condition when they’re ready. However, it’s just as important for parents to provide children and teens with helpful resources, like informative pamphlets, optional support groups, or access to licensed therapist. Reinforcing positive body image is also key so intersex children and teens can develop into fearless, confident adults. Do you have any advice for teens whose parents aren’t dealing well with it all? Where can they go? And what can you do? CJ: I would talk to your friends about it if your parents aren’t dealing very well - maybe start with one close friend who you trust and let them know about it? Mostly friends want to help and if they’re your real friends they should accept you no matter what. My friends have been absolutely integral to my journey as a genderqueer person with a DSD and they have always been amazing and continue to be strong for me - as I do for them. Friends’ parents can also be good people to talk to, and of course, counsellors or psychologists. If you feel like you’re struggling because your parents are finding it hard, maybe go to the doctors by yourself or have a friend come with you and ask to see a counsellor or psychologist? Many departments that deal with intersex conditions/DSDs have a psychologist who is there to help patients deal with their diagnosis and also talk to their parents about how they might be feeling. Ali: Having a DSD can sometimes feel like carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, but you don’t have to go through it alone. There are web resources available for children and young adults born intersex and a number of global intersex organizations with helpful condition specific information. I found that speaking to my parents with a therapist present eased anxiety over speaking to them alone. Amanda: Friends can provide a wonderful support system, they certainly did for me when I was younger. I opened up to very few friends at first, and having a small group of people with whom I could safely talk about being intersex with was kind of awesome. The Internet also has some great resources out there for intersex folk. There are tons of blogs and sites that are full of really helpful information and run by some cool people; there is a pretty expansive network of other intersex people online, and it’s so easy to pop them a message. If you feel comfortable you can also explore the idea of seeing a counselor or a therapist; having a person in your life who cares about it but isn’t necessarily a 100% part of it can be really great helpful. Does anyone have similar problems with parents (reacting poorly/not reacting?) CJ: My parents have always found it difficult to talk about MRKH with me or anything related to MRKH that might also be related to my gender, for that matter. I’ve tried to start conversations numerous times and it mostly feels as though they want it all kept quiet until the time comes for me to sort out my infertility. Or if it is spoken about at all it’s all over very quickly almost like ripping off a plaster, so I tend not to really discuss it any more unless one of my parents brings it up or it is relevant to a particular conversation. I find it difficult enough to start these conversations as it is, and I feel as though there is shame attached to the conversations sometimes, or a sense of avoidance. Having said all of this though, in every other area of my life my parents are awesome and I love them both very much. Ali: Days after I was diagnosed my sophomore year of high school, I broke down into tears while playing a competitive basketball game. I suffered a panic attack thinking about my infertility and had difficulty breathing or standing up straight as my knees buckled from under me. After the game one of my parents trivialized the situation by joking I should, “chill out and take a bong rip”. That advice is filed under things to never say to your kids. Lenny: My parents didn’t really know what to do. They didn’t really talk to me about it, and so I never talked about it. They didn’t act like adults in a lot of ways. They didn’t do research. They let doctors bully me into procedures. They didn’t take care of me when the shame really set in. But that said, they’re ashamed too, and I think for a long time they thought that not talking about it would make it not exist. They were supportive in a lot of other ways; they never once withdrew their love from me. At the same time, they should have been parents instead of observers, and if I went back in time, I think I’d tell them that. What does it mean to be a woman? “Prance little pony” syndrome!(essentially: bucking “ideals” and emphasizing personal self-understanding above all.) Lexye: As a girl from the south, I totally get this episode. I had tons of friends who did pageants and I actually wanted to do them… but my parents told me no. Looking back, I’m so glad I didn’t do it. As a young woman with CAIS, I’ve always felt pretty girly. But when I found out I couldn’t get pregnant, it was hard. I mean, in my hometown, women almost aspire to get married, have kids, and settle down. I’m glad this episode talks about these standards, and I actually feel blessed to have my DSD. Like Lauren, it poked holes in things like pageants or childbirth–things I had thought showcased what it meant to be “ woman”–and made me realize that I am the truest of woman and feel blessed with how I am made. I don’t need anyone to tell me that I am Miss Bluegrass State to know that I’m me. CJ: I think that every woman/female-identified person is slightly different and we’re all unique in our own ways. I identify as a genderqueer woman and so this means that although I feel split between the genders sometimes, I lean more towards the female side if I had to choose! As I’ve said before, MRKH did not change my gender - it more asked me to confront it. When I found out I couldn’t carry a baby, it threw my identity into question a LOT. The one ‘female’ trait which I identified with and had wanted to have since I was a little girl was gone because I couldn’t become pregnant. Now, I love living as a genderqueer woman and wearing what I want to wear - I don’t need to wear a dress to prove that I’m who I am. Instead I wear checked shirts, shirts with slogans on, and I even have one with a cute kitten printed on the front! Skinny jeans and Converse shoes make up a lot of my wardrobe too and I’m VERY happy to bend expectations of gender if anyone wants ;). I also wear a lot of makeup which makes me smile :). There shouldn’t be so much pressure on women in particular (although other people feel it too) to start a family etc. The general public or work colleagues shouldn’t feel it’s their right to say ‘so when are you having a baby?’ or ‘you’re so LUCKY you don’t get periods!’. I’ve had the second one said to me a few times and, although well-meaning, it can be hurtful and bring back feelings of social shame/dysphoria etc. Women and female identified people are strong, powerful and independent and should be free to be whoever they want to be. Let’s face it - we’re pretty awesome!
