Photo by @irablockphoto (Ira Block) It's the 14th Anniversary of the tragic events of September 11. I photographed the Twin Towers of Light the first time they illuminated the New York skyline, March 2002, six months after the towers fell. The photo was taken while I was on assignment for the National Geographic Magazine. I post this photo today as a memorial to those who perished, and a tribute to those who survived. #9/11 #twintowers #wtc #newyork #sept11 @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative

#BruceSpringsteen on 9/11: “I took my kids to Ground Zero in July. . . We just walked out onto that public-viewing platform. What's very moving down there are the photographs and memorials. . .Pictures of people with their families on a sunny afternoon in the yard. People in their uniforms. . . I found that sight to be deeply, deeply moving. Just the sense of sacrifice. . . I think one of the things that shocked people was the size of the sacrifice made on that day. There's nothing that I think could prepare people — I mean, whatever they're paying you to be a fireman or a policeman, they're not paying you that. And that goes to some central point about how people experience their duty, their place in the world, their connection to the people alongside themselves and to complete strangers. If you look at the past twenty years, people might say, 'Oh, that's disappeared from America.' But if you look closely, it's there every day.“ From RollingStone.com, September 11th, 2002. The Unexpected Color Palettes of New Orleans' Homes

This photographer's shots just might inspire you to head to the paint aisle.<p>Rows of technicolor homes might not suit every city (we'd be certainly be surprised if every brownstone in Brooklyn was suddenly a "purplestone" or a "pinkstone" — though they do exist). But New Orleans is another story. …

Photograph by @paulnicklen for @natgeo in the Yucatan, Mexico. A young Mayan man ascends a rope and stick ladder from one of their favorite swimming holes. The Mayans bring tourists here daily to cool off after guiding them on hikes through the rainforest. Unbeknownst to the tourists, just a few feet below the surface lie the remains of over a hundred Mayan people who were buried here over 500 years ago. You can see that many of the skulls in this large burial site were ritually modified and some show signs of sacrificial rites. To see my favorite image of these skulls from this underwater graveyard, please #follow me on @paulnicklen I have never been so aware of every inch of my body, camera and fins while hovering just inches about this incredibly delicate and important site. There's something special about an alpine start. Luke Konarzewski took this awesome photo on June 10 while on a solo climb of #MountRainier -- the towering icon in Mount Rainier #NationalPark’s landscape. The photo is from the top of the Cleaver section on the #DisappointmentCleaver route, showing the #stars glittering overhead and the #NorthernLights shimmering in the distance. Using a long exposure, Konarzewski was able to pick up what he says is one of the most fantastic scenes that he has ever witnessed in the mountains. Photo courtesy of Luke Konarzewski.
