I will be posting images throughout the year of our wonderful national parks in celebration and honor of our country's best idea. Here is Acadia National Park, located along the coast of Maine. photo by @joelsartore | National Geographic #PhotoArk butterflies have landed at the #Vatican! These and many other #animals from National Geographic Photo Ark were projected onto St. Peter's Basillica in #Rome as part of 'Fiat Lux: Enlighten our Common Home.' The historic projection was assembled by the @OceanicPreservationSociety and Obscura Digital to honor not only #Pope Francis and his concern for humanity and #nature, but also to coincide with the climate change summit currently being held in #Paris. It is hoped that this large scale projection can create an awareness and a global movement to save the #Earth and all the species who live here. @krivicmatjaz Hidden in the the Haraz mountains of Yemen, a number of villages embelish the terraced slopes. Their imposing architecture meets two needs, defending the villagers while leaving plenty of space for crops. The area is known as one of the best regions to grow khat, a plant, known for its stimulating effects (classified by WHO as a light drug) and most Yemeni men can’t imagine life without chewing it every day. Each village is built like a castle; the houses themselves form the wall, equipped with one or two easily defensible doors. People living in them have no idea about the age of their impressive homes, but they estimate them older than 600 years. The fog rising from the valley towards the village of Shugruf makes this fairy tale settlement even more mystical. UrbaniStan is a street photography project that explores the urban environment of the developing world. The project aims to demonstrate that the term ‘urban’ in the developing world does not necessarily mean 'modern', and aims to draw the attention of the general public to the slowly declining social values that are collapsing under the increasing pressures of modernisation. The main focus of the project is to search and explore the points where people and communities develop and entwine with the urbanity of humanity.
